ChatGPT vs Claude
These are the two assistants most small businesses start with. Both have a free plan and a $20/month individual plan, so the choice comes down to the work you do most.
Quick verdict
ChatGPT is the best all-rounder, with image creation, voice, deep research and an $8 Go plan below Plus. Claude is the better writer and our default for long documents and anything you'll publish. Plenty of founders pay for one and keep the other on its free plan.
Who each is best for
ChatGPT is best if you want one assistant for everything (drafts, brainstorming, images, voice chats, deep research), or you want a paid tier below $20 with the $8/month Go plan.
Claude is best if writing quality matters most (client emails, articles, proposals), you work with long documents, or you'd use Claude Code, which is included from Pro.

Where ChatGPT wins
ChatGPT covers the widest range of everyday jobs. The free plan includes unlimited text chats plus a taste of uploads, image creation, voice and deep research. Plus at $20/month expands all of those and adds projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. If $20 is more than you need, Go at $8/month gives you more messages, uploads and image creation, but OpenAI notes it may include ads.
Where Claude wins
Claude is the one we reach for when the words matter. It's strong with long documents and edits and keeps a natural tone, which is why it's our default for anything we publish. The free plan already includes web search, file creation, memory and Artifacts. Pro adds more usage, Research, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, and Claude Code for building small tools.
For teams
Claude's Team plan costs $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually, for 2 to 150 people, with central billing, SSO and no model training on your content by default. ChatGPT offers Business and Enterprise plans, and its pricing page lists those separately from the individual plans compared here.
Our take
We rank both in Best for Research & Writing and Best AI Writing Tools. Our verdicts call ChatGPT "the best all-rounder" and Claude "the best writer of the big assistants". Try both on the same real task, like a client email or a one-page proposal, and keep the one whose first draft needs fewer edits.
Bottom line
Pick ChatGPT as your everyday all-rounder and Claude for writing you'll publish. At $20/month each, many teams keep both: one paid and one on the free plan.
