AI Tools for Small Business 2026: What the Best Tools Actually Cost
An AI Stack Crunch data report · Data as of October 18, 2026
Small businesses keep hearing that AI is cheap, or that it's a subscription trap. We checked. AI Stack Crunch ranks the best AI tools for small businesses, founders and solopreneurs across 20 categories, and every listing carries a short pricing summary. We analyzed all 218 listings (197 unique tools) to see what the best tools really cost to start.
Headline findings
1. Nearly half of the best AI tools have a free plan. 91 of 197 unique tools (46%) offer a free plan or a free open-source/self-hosted option. Among the first-listed picks, 13 of the 20 category winners have a free plan. Free plans outnumber "paid with a free trial only" offers by more than 7 to 1 (91 vs. 12).
2. When a price is stated, the typical entry point is $30 a month. 77 tools state a lowest monthly paid price. Their median is $30/month, the range runs from $4.99 to $597, and 53 of the 77 (69%) start under $50/month. Tools that also have a free plan start lower (median $20/month, n=34) than tools with no free plan (median $49/month, n=43).
3. Price transparency is the real problem. Only 77 of 197 tools (39%) state a monthly dollar figure in their headline pricing. 29 tools (15%) give no price at all: 21 say "see pricing page" and 8 require a custom quote or demo. The rest are priced by usage (11), bundled into another subscription (10) or priced by ad spend (9).
4. The cost gap between categories is wide. The median entry price in AI SEO, AEO & GEO is $129/month (n=9), and only 2 of 12 listed tools have a free plan. AI Outbound & Lead Gen comes in at $78/month (n=13). AI meeting note-takers sit at the other end: 7 of 8 have a free plan, and the median paid tier is $16/month (n=6). All 7 of our top no-code app builders have a free plan.
5. A small business can start a 6-tool AI stack for $0. Five of the six first-listed picks below have a free plan, and the sixth category has a free-plan alternative. Upgrading the first-listed picks to their lowest stated paid tiers costs $58/month plus $0.99 per AI-resolved support ticket, with one seat and one social channel, while two of the picks stay on free tiers.

What this means for a small business
- Start free, upgrade one tool at a time. In most everyday categories (writing, design, social, CRM, meeting notes) the best tool has a free plan.
- Budget for the specialist categories. SEO/AEO, outbound and paid-ads tooling is where costs jump into the $78-$129+/month range.
- Treat "see pricing page" as a cost. One in seven top tools gives no price up front, so get a quote before you commit.
Methodology
- Source. The pricing summary on every listing in the AI Stack Crunch directory (
data/tools.json), taken on Oct 18, 2026. These are our editors' summaries of each vendor's public pricing, not a fresh audit of every vendor page, and prices change often. Read figures as "as listed." - Unit. 218 category listings, deduplicated by tool name to 197 unique tools. GoHighLevel, for example, appears in 4 categories. Category charts use listings. Overall figures use unique tools. When the same tool had different pricing text in different categories (10 tools), we used the more specific version, the one that states a dollar figure.
- Pricing model (first rule that matches wins). Text mentioning "open source"/"self-host" counts as free (open source). Text starting "Free trial" counts as trial only. "Free SDK + API usage" counts as usage-based, because you pay for usage. Any other text starting "Free" counts as a free plan, including "Free CRM", "Free start", "Free preview" and "Free ($X credits)". Then, in order: "ad spend" → ad-spend based; custom/enterprise/demo/book a call → custom quote; included in / part of / add-on / "X plans" → bundled; any other "trial" → trial only; usage/pay-as-you-go/per-token/per-minute/credits → usage-based; "See pricing page" → not stated; everything else ("Paid", "From $X/mo") → paid.
- Lowest stated monthly price. The first dollar figure in the pricing text that's billed per month, including per seat, user or channel per month. Tier lists like "$39 / $94 / $174 mo" take the first figure. Per-token, per-minute, per-person and per-resolution charges are excluded. So are one-time credit packs ("From $39, credits never expire") and ad budgets. Where a listing gives both a monthly and an annual-billing rate, we used the first one listed, so a few figures are annual-billing rates (for example, "From $14/seat/mo (annual)"). Category medians are shown only where at least 5 tools state a price.
- Stack. Six everyday small-business jobs. For each we took the first-listed tool and its lowest stated paid tier, assuming 1 seat and 1 social channel. If the first-listed pick has no free plan, the "start for $0" column uses the highest-ranked tool in that category that does.
- Reproducible. The script (
analyze.py), the row-by-row classification (classified.csv) and all results (results.json) are available on request.
